Looking for a way to spend some quiet time outside in a low-stress environment, perhaps with a few close friends or family members? Why not try fishing? If you are not already a fisherperson, the idea may seem a little farfetched. But it’s not. Fishing can be a great way to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy nature.
Fishing has long been touted for its meditative properties and it’s easy to see why. When you combine the sounds of the water with the trance-like state of the fisherperson watching the water’s surface, you’ve got a perfect recipe for contemplation. You have to pay just enough attention to the line to push worries out of mind, at least temporarily. Rather than being in nature, when you fish it is as if you are a part of nature. For all these reasons, fishing is a great stress reliever, even for those who are not particularly interested in catching fish. The British military has even introduced fishing to soldiers who are headed to Afghanistan as a way to assuage pre-deployment stress. They are considering extending the program to include soldiers who are wounded on the battlefield to help them recuperate. (1)
Although you may want to limit conversation to avoid scaring away the fish, the sport can also provide an ideal setting for connecting with a friend or family member. As you both experience the therapeutic benefits of your surroundings, you can bond and share in a way that’s not possible in a more hectic environment.
Fishing requires little in the way of equipment. A rod and reel, some bait, and a quiet spot is all you really need. However, you may want to include some sunscreen, insect repellent, and a picnic lunch if you are going to make a day of it.
You can fish just about anywhere—just be sure you are not on private property and be aware of the licensing laws in your area. Most states require a fishing license for anyone over the age of 16.
So if you need a change of pace—something to move you into the slow lane where you can relax and really connect with those around you—fishing may be the answer. It doesn’t take much to get started and it is likely you can fish somewhere near your home. Who knows, you might get hooked and discover a life-long hobby that centers you in your life, relaxes you, and might even put a healthy dinner on the table.
